Mills College Natural Sciences Building has received the Platinum LEED certificate, becoming the first building in Oakland to earn the highest certified rating in environmental design and construction, and the fourth building in the Bay Area to be Platinum Certified. The 26,000 square foot 17 million dollar state of the art facility is 90 percent more energy efficient than a typical lab in the Bay Area and 45 percent more efficient than required by state law. Smith & Sons Electric installed automatic day light sensors, dimming ballasts, lighting control, the photovoltaic system providing over 30 percent of the building's electrical needs, water reclamation recycling system, and emergency generator.
