Project Description:
The new 9,300 square foot, 7.5 million dollar structure at 1125 University Avenue (cross street San Pablo Avenue) was the first net-zero library in California, which has the largest community meeting room in the branch system. It can hold up to 100 people and it can be configured for video conferences and computer coding, as well as for meetings. There are numerous electrical outlets near the tables to accommodate laptops (which are also available for use) and a long counter that faces out onto the small garden holding a newly planted cork oak tree.

Project Description:
Smith & Sons Electric completed an exciting renovation project for the Santa Clara Unified School District, with BFGC providing architectural services. This project, delivered under a multi-prime contract, consisted of the demolition, new construction, and modernization of several 1950's era buildings at Santa Clara High School. The scope of work included the demolition of an existing administration building, construction of a new 10,000 square foot replacement facility with skylight, the reconstruction of the school’s library, and the modernization of eight classrooms and support spaces.

The building has been designed to meet the criteria of LEED Gold and has been registered and submitted to USGBC (United States Green Building Council) for the Gold Level certification.

The Mediated Learning Center was designed to provide flexible general purpose classrooms and labs for increased instructional space and academic capacity for anthropology, sociology, and world languages. The Mediated Learning Center comprises 66,900 square feet and houses offices for distance learning, staff and organizational development, and the technology resources group, including the broadcast media film and TV studio. The goal is to make this an energy efficient facility obtaining a platinum rating based on the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.

Project Description:
The Alameda County Water Treatment Plant, a 35.5 million dollar facility, is capable of producing a maximum of 35 million gallons of potable water per day. Smith & Sons Electric, in conjunction with the water treatment facility, completed a 1.2 Mega Watt Electrical Generating Plant that supplies all the plants electrical needs. Smith & Sons Electric was also the provider and installer of the PLC computer based, redundant, programmable local controllers that provide process and control monitoring. This facility also uses the state-of-the-art ozone disinfection system that reduces the use of chemicals in the water treatment process. As an example of the scope of the electrical work required at this facility, the following materials were installed: 26,400 feet of underground electrical conduit, 87,900 feet of exposed conduit throughout the plant, over 1,163,800 feet of electrical wire and cable, and over 23,000 man-hours.

Project Description:
NASA Ames Collaborative Support Facility, Bldg. N232 is a new building located at Moffett Field, CA. The building and on-site work has been constructed as sustainable entities. The project is designed with a goal to achieve LEED-NC v2.2 Platinum Certification. The new facility consists of a 2-story structural steel framed building of approximately 50,000 square feet.
The building is comprised of two separate wings, two stories each with mechanical penthouses on the roofs. In addition to the open office space, the building includes a glass wall atrium, accessible restrooms, a lunchroom, elevator, and mechanical/electrical support areas. Construction also includes complete electrical and data communications to support the building operations, photovoltaic power and solar hot-water systems, fire detection and suppression systems, an advanced lighting system, and security systems. The site includes preparation and site utilities, installation of approximately 60 geothermal wells, new roadways and parking. This project also consisted of a new substation requiring Smith & Sons Electric to do a shutdown at the NASA Ames facility.

The electrical design incorporates high efficiency transformers with energy efficient lighting and daylight controls. The building has been designed to meet the criteria of LEED Silver and has been registered and submitted to USGBC (United States Green Building Council) for the Silver Level certification. The project design is 21 percent better than California Title 24 and both the owner and the design are eligible for energy rebate incentives.

The 60 million dollar substation includes a vehicle maintenance building with washing and fueling facilities. This project is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification. Smith & Sons Electric installed the Lutron EcoSystem lighting control system comprised of digital dimming ballasts, local controls, wattstopper intelligent lighting control panels and environmental sensors, working together to save electricity, increase space flexibility, increase occupant comfort and productivity, and reduce maintenance costs.

The school was built in 1916 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Project Description:
The Redwood Shores Library is a new 22,558 square foot single-story high-tech library, light-filled building designed to take advantage of its waterside setting. It has community meeting rooms and gathering spaces, a family place and storytelling area for young children and their caregivers, a café with outdoor seating, the overall look-and-feel of a neighborhood bookstore, and an interactive interpretive center relating to the bay.
